Upload Your Files.

Article Friendly Joy!

It's now time to upload those Article Friendly files to your web site! This is just a matter of selecting the file you unzipped on your computer and drag/drop them into the folder on your host's server.

Where should I move my file to?

In most cases, when you connect to your site thru FTP, you will be in whats called the "Home" folder. This folder is not accessible to people connecting to your domain thru a browser, and is a good place for storing files you don't want others to find.

file structure

As you can see with this image, there is a "www" folder and a "public_html" folder. These two folders actually lead to the same place - the place where your visitors will go to load your site's pages. Your site may look a little different, and the "public_html" folder may be named "htdocs", but clicking on it will still take you to the right spot!

If you double click on either the www folder or the public_html folders, FileZilla will move you into what is called the "www" root folder. This is where you want to upload you Article Friendly files. You could move into your www root folder and create a subdirectory (folder) and upload your AF files there, but this is not recommended if you want the most benefits to having a website on the Internet.

What are those other folders?

The other folders are used for backend software in your account. For example, mail, logs of your site and visitors & ftp amongst other things that you really don't have to be concerned with. You could tho create a folder to keep private zips of your scripts, or backups of your site for example.

What do I do now?

Double click on either the www folder or the public_html folder, and you will be in the www root folder. We are going to select the AF files you will need to upload to your www root folder, and then drag/drop the selected files into that folder.

Please note that your host may not provide a www folder, but possibly just a public_html or even a htdocs folder. These names are all the same, and hold the files that the public will be able to see in their browsers!

Ok, I'm there.

local file list

Great! once in the www root folder, you will need to find the folder you unzipped the Article Friendly files. You will be able to see the files on your computer in the left hand pane in FileZilla. As you probably noticed in the image above, I've found the articlefriendly_pro folder on my computer in the left hand window pane, and clicked on it once to select it.

Below that left hand window pane with the selected "admin" folder is another pane that shows the folders And files in the articlefriendly_pro folder. This is where you will select the folders and files to upload.

Remember, in FileZilla, the files on your computer are in the left hand window panes, and the files on your hosted account server are shown in the right hand window panes. Also, if you purchased the Article Friendly Standard version, your folder name will be "articlefriendly" rather than "articlefriendly_pro".

select files

First thing to do is to select the "admin" folder as shown above. Then scroll down to the last file (unsubscribe.php), hold the "Shift" button and left click on the unsubscribe.php file. All the folders and files should be selected now. Next, Left click and hold down your mouse button on the highlighted files, and drag/drop them into the right hand window pane (drop the file on a blank spot rather than on a folder unless you want all the files in a particular folder...).

upload files

If you did this correctly, you should see the files being uploaded as shown in the bottom window pane of FileZilla. While the files are uploading, go ahead and take a break! It will take about 5 - 10 minutes depending on your internet connection speed! Once FileZilla is finished uploading, you should see all the files you selected on your computer now residing on your Internet site as shown in the image below (or something similar. The defaut folders on your host's server may be slightly different than shown). Plus, your bottom window pane should show no files if they were all uploaded.

Good Job!

Last thing to do is to change the admin folder name on your hosted site to something else. If you click once on the admin folder of the AF files you just uploaded, it will be highlighted in blue. Change the name to something not easy to guess, but something you will remember. For example, I could change the admin folder name to "yGgn34" and still be able to access the admin section on my hosted website with no problem, provided I remembered the new folder name!

If everything went as planned, we can move onto creating the database that your new site will use. The next part is the "Create Database" tutorial. We will return to Filezilla and finally use PsPad to edit a couple of files that will use our database connection information we will create in the next tutorial!
